Viktor Hovland, the No. 13-ranked golfer in the world, withdrew from the U.S. Open midway through his second round Friday due to lingering pain in his left eye.

Broadcast partner NBC reported that before his round, the Norwegian "had some sand fly into his left eye" while warming up but attempted to play through the irritation.

Hovland started his round on the 10th hole, and a doctor attended to him while he was playing No. 11. After recording four bogeys and a double bogey over 10 holes, Hovland decided he couldn't continue.

Hovland shot a 3-over 74 in the first round and was in contention to make the cut entering Friday.

The 23-year-old has two PGA Tour wins to his name, coming in February and December 2020 at the Puerto Rico Open and Mayakoba Golf Classic, respectively. He tied for 13th at last year's U.S. Open.
