BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,595,660 on Wednesday as 13,823 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 152,718 with 162 new deaths.

LOS ANGELES -- California, the most populous U.S. state with a population of around 40 million, is about to top the grim mark of 3 million COVID-19 cases, showed data released by the state health authorities on Tuesday.

The Golden State reported 23,794 new confirmed cases with 146 additional deaths during the prior 24-hour reporting period, pushing its total count to 2,996,968 with 33,739 related deaths, the California Department of Public Health said in a daily release.

HARBIN -- Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province reported 16 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 31 asymptomatic infections on Tuesday, local health authorities said Wednesday.

All the new cases have been sent to designated medical institutions, their close contacts and secondary close contacts have been put under medical isolation, and the places they visited have been disinfected, according to the Heilongjiang provincial health commission.

WASHINGTON -- The Trump administration's incompetence in handling COVID-19 has drawn harsh criticism from the academia as the country's death toll from the disease topped another chilling mark of 400,000 on Tuesday.

Never before in the recent century has an American president witnessed such a tragic loss of lives. The number is fast approaching the 405,000 U.S. fatalities during World War II and the pandemic is among the deadliest events in the country. The 1918 flu pandemic killed 675,000 Americans and at least 50 million worldwide.

HAVANA -- Cuba reported on Tuesday 330 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the national caseload to 18,773 and the nationwide death toll to 175, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Of the new infections, only nine were imported cases, the lowest number in 15 days, which corresponds to the restrictive measures for foreign entry into the country put in place at the beginning of the year.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil registered 1,192 deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, raising the nationwide tally to 211,491, the Ministry of Health said Tuesday.

Tests detected 62,094 new cases, bringing the national caseload to 8,573,864, it said.

LISBON -- Portuguese Economy Minister Pedro Siza Vieira tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the ministry said.

According to members of the government cabinet, Siza Vieira has "some symptoms" and will remain in isolation at home.
