WUHAN, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) beat Hubei University of Technology (HBUT) 78-56 in the opening game of the 23rd Chinese University Basketball Association (CUBA) league on Saturday night.
HBUT took the lead as the match began, while home team HUST, playing with the cheers of over 3,000 in attendance, quickly got motivated to equalize the score before the first half ended. HUST extended the lead with consecutive 3-pointers in the third quarter and won the current CUBA season's opener.
The CUBA league was the first large-scale non-professional league to return in Wuhan since the pandemic broke out. More than 3,500 audiences watched the game in the arena, wearing the tailored CUBA facial masks. Meanwhile, over 10 kilometers away from the battleground, HBUT organized 1,500 students to enjoy the game via live broadcast.
The current season is planned to last from November to next June, covering nearly 2,000 teams from all over China.
According to the organizing committee, offline matches will be organized under strict epidemic-prevention rules, and they will also focus on the online broadcast of the matches so that more audiences can enjoy the season.
