Cape Town - The Kolkata Knight Riders have appointed former New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum as their new head coach ahead of next season.

McCullum will replace former Proteas legend Jacques Kallis, who has been in the role since October 2015.

During Kallis' tenure, the Knight Riders failed to reach the Indian Premier League (IPL) final.

In this year's IPL, the side finished fifth, losing out on playoff qualification based on net run-rate, after a six-match losing streak midway through the season.

Meanwhile, McCullum had two stints as a player with the Knight Riders in the IPL, between 2008 and 2010 and then again for the 2012-13 seasons.

The news comes after McCullum was appointed as coach of Trinbago Knight Riders, who is owned by the same group, in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

"It's a great honour to take on this responsibility," said McCullum.

"The Knight Rider franchises in IPL & CPL have become iconic and have set the standard in franchise cricket. We have fantastic squads in both KKR & TKR and I along with the support staff will be looking to build on the successes both franchises have enjoyed."

Knight Riders chief executive Venky Mysore, commented: "Brendon has been an integral part of the Knight Riders family for a long time.

"His leadership qualities, honesty, positive and aggressive style, combined with his natural ability to bring the best out of the teams he has been a part of makes him ideally suited to lead both KKR and TKR as a head coach."
